Where You Should Look Elsewhere

  • Specialty chemical handling: If you're dealing with concentrated acids, aggressive solvents, or hazmat situations, you need a specialist supplier with chemical compatibility data for your specific substances. Portwest has some options, but this isn't their core strength.
  • High-end auto-darkening welding helmets: Brands like Speedglas and Viking remain the standard for good reasons. Portwest makes excellent welding clothing, but I wouldn't swap a professional welder's helmet out for the sake of brand uniformity.

If you're a small contractor or a mid-size facility like ours, Portwest workwear is a genuinely solid choice. Just remember that no single brand covers every edge case—and that's okay.

We spent four years buying hard hats that met every standard in the book—but with chin straps that nobody used. We had chemical gloves available, but they weren't where the chemicals were handled. The products weren't the problem. The system was.

Now every PPE purchase goes through the same filter:

  2. Will people actually wear it for a full shift? If the answer is no, we don't buy it.

  4. Is the cost per unit low enough for rotation? You need backups when gear gets damaged, sweaty, or contaminated.

That Tuesday in March ended up being one of the most useful days of my career. Nobody got hurt, and we learned a lot. Our record since then—touch wood—has been clean. And the next time someone asks me which PPE protects against liquid chemicals, I'll give them the same answer I gave our safety committee: it depends on the chemical.
