Buy the highest-rated PPE that a worker will actually wear through the end of a shift. That is not a marketing slogan; it is my entire procurement philosophy. I am not a safety engineer. I am the office administrator who handles procurement for a 90-person industrial contractor with three locations and around $120,000 in annual safety and workwear orders. That means I order everything from Portwest FR clothing to the Portwest A722 anti impact cut resistant glove, and I field monthly questions about Carhartt steel toe boots and other work boot brands.

The usual question is whether premium gear is worth it. The better question is whether the crew will keep it on. Quality matters, but it has to survive field conditions. In our 2024 field check, 23% of workers had replaced their assigned hand protection with something lighter by mid-morning. After we moved one maintenance crew to the A722 and adjusted the sizing mix, the noncompliance rate dropped to 4%. That change cost less than an urgent care visit and the insurance mess that follows a recordable.

That second hazard is easy to forget. A cut-resistant glove can handle a blade, but it won't do much when the top of the hand whacks a beam or a pipe. The A722 adds molded impact protection on top of a cut-resistant liner.

We use it for metal handling, demolition, and general maintenance. It is not the right glove for precision assembly. It is bulkier than a lightweight nitrile glove, and the sizing runs different enough that we order sample packs before we commit to a full case. Honestly, I have never fully understood why the same glove model fits some workers perfectly and leaves others rubbing their palms. My best guess is that hand width matters as much as length.

I also check the standard labels. In the US, impact resistance for hand protection is tested under ANSI/ISEA 138-2019. Cut resistance is still rated separately under EN 388 or an ASTM method. So can an FR garment that was washed with the wrong detergent or used after it breaks down.

Our crew requests Carhartt steel toe boots often. I understand why: Carhartt's work boots have a long reputation for fitting wider feet and lasting through rough conditions. I do not treat Carhartt as our only brand, but I do listen when workers ask for it by name. If a crew trusts a boot, they will wear it. If not, they will switch into sneakers the moment the supervisor looks away (and honestly, I do not blame them after an eight-hour day).

For the category our system files under 'mens work boots,' the label I check first is ASTM F2413-18. That standard covers impact and compression protection for the toe. Then I look at the outsole for slip resistance and the midsole for puncture protection.

One thing that still surprises new buyers: steel toe is not automatically safer than composite toe. Composite toe caps have to meet the same impact standard, and they do not conduct cold the way steel does. In winter, that changes comfort on the job site.

My bulk ordering rule before putting 60 or 80 pairs in a PO: order one sample pair in the middle sizes and have six crew members each wear them for a week. A sample order costs around $300 to $400 in shipping and time. The wrong bulk order for 80 workers costs a lot more.

Are nitrile gloves FSA eligible? It depends on why you need them

The quick answer is yes for medical use and no for ordinary work gloves. The IRS definition of a medical expense, from Publication 502, is an item whose primary purpose is to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent illness or disease. Nitrile gloves fit that definition when they protect a wound, handle a medication, or prevent infection during first aid. The same gloves for painting, welding, or cleaning a shop floor are not FSA eligible just because the box says nitrile.

I learned this from a declined transaction, not from reading the tax code. I tried to buy a case of nitrile gloves for the maintenance team with an FSA card, and it would not go through. The store's payment code was for general merchandise, not medical supplies. The card system has no way to read intent.

If you have a prescribed treatment that requires gloves, keep the prescription and a doctor's note. And check with your benefits administrator before you spend. HSA rules generally follow IRS rules, but individual FSA plans can be stricter. This is a plain-language explanation, not tax advice. When in doubt, start with IRS Publication 502 and your plan documents.

Where this approach reaches its limit

I do not want anyone to read this and think a product fixes a broken safety culture. The A722 glove cannot protect someone who never puts it on. OSHA's PPE rules—29 CFR 1910.132 for general industry and 29 CFR 1926.95 for construction—still start with a hazard assessment, and no supplier's catalog can take its place.

I verify every new product against the written hazard assessment, I ask the crew before I trust a brochure, and I keep copies of the certificates in the same folder as the invoice. That process has served us longer than any single brand.
