Portwest Bizweld FR Coverall vs Euro Work Coverall: A Procurement Manager's Head-to-Head

A Note on Chemical Protection

Neither of these coveralls is designed for liquid chemical protection. If you're dealing with hazardous liquids—solvents, acids, caustics—you need PPE specifically rated for that. Which PPE can protect you from liquid chemicals? The answer is chemical-resistant suits (like Portwest's own PW3 Chem suit or the TX110), usually rated to EN 13034 or EN 14605 depending on the risk level. Those are a different category entirely. Don't assume a heavy cotton coverall will stop a chemical splash. It won't.

2. Durability & Comfort: The Trade-Off You Need to Know

This is where the conventional wisdom gets a little scrambled. Most people assume the Bizweld FR, being heavier and more protective, is also more durable. And it is tough—the fabric is thick, the seams are reinforced, and the zippers are heavy-duty YKK. But the Euro Work Coverall, in my experience, holds up just as well in non-welding environments. The poly-cotton fabric resists tearing and abrasion, and the stitching on the Euro model is surprisingly good for the price point. I've had Euro coveralls last two years in a warehouse setting with weekly washing.

Where the Bizweld FR really wins is in heat and flame resistance. That's its party trick. But the trade-off is weight and stiffness. The Bizweld FR is noticeably heavier—I'd guess about 30% heavier than the Euro—and it's stiffer, especially when new. It takes a few washes to break in. The Euro Work Coverall, by contrast, is comfortable right out of the package. It's lighter, breathes better, and has a bit of stretch in the poly-cotton blend that the Bizweld doesn't.

Verdict: For durability in general industrial use, the Euro holds its own. The Bizweld FR is tougher in high-heat scenarios but comes with a comfort penalty that your team will notice on 10-hour shifts.

3. Cost Per Wear: The Metric That Surprised Me

Here's where I'll admit I was wrong. When I first started comparing prices, I assumed the Bizweld FR was the more expensive option upfront—and it is, by about 40-50% per unit. But I didn't think about cost per wear until one of our maintenance guys pointed out that his Bizweld FR had been in rotation for three years and was still going strong, while his previous Euro coveralls lasted about 18 months before the cuffs frayed and the knees thinned out.

I pulled the numbers. Over a three-year period, the Bizweld FR actually worked out to about the same cost per wear—or maybe even slightly less—because it lasted longer in the environments where we needed it. 4. Compliance & Certifications

This might be the most overlooked dimension—until the auditor shows up. The Bizweld FR Coverall carries EN 11611 (welding) and EN 11612 (heat and flame) certifications, plus it's often rated for arc flash (ASTM F1959/F1959M) depending on the specific variant. If your facility has welding or hot work, this certification is mandatory for compliance. I learned that the hard way after a safety audit in late 2023 flagged our old coveralls as non-compliant.

The Euro Work Coverall is certified to EN 13688 (general protective clothing) and maybe EN 13034 (light chemical splash) for some variants, but it doesn't carry any flame-resistance ratings. It's fine for most industrial settings, but if your risk assessment requires FR, the Euro won't cut it.

Verdict: Check your risk assessment before you decide. If you need FR certification, the Bizweld FR is the only choice. If you don't, the Euro Work Coverall is fully compliant for general use.

Other PPE You'll Probably Need Alongside These

Standardizing on coveralls is a good start, but a complete PPE program needs more. A few things we always order alongside our Portwest coveralls:

  • First aid kit—We keep a well-stocked first aid kit in every production area. ANSI-compliant kits with burn supplies, eye wash, and trauma supplies. You can't have a safety program without one.

It's certified, durable, and despite the higher upfront cost, the cost per wear is competitive if you actually need the protection. I'd recommend ordering a sample in the size your team wears most and getting feedback on comfort before placing a bulk order.

If your team works in general industrial, warehousing, maintenance, or assembly environments without fire risks, the Portwest Euro Work Coverall is probably the better choice. It's lighter, more comfortable, and offers excellent value for the price. Just make sure you verify sizing—the Euro fit is a bit more generous than some other brands, so check the Portwest size chart.

And whatever you choose, make sure you have the supporting PPE in place: first aid kits in every zone, Kask hard hats for head protection, and proper chemical PPE if liquids are present. Because a coverall is just one piece of the puzzle.
