Portwest is a full-line PPE manufacturer — high-vis clothing, coveralls, safety boots, gloves, hard hats, safety glasses, welding gear, FR garments, rainwear. If it protects a worker, they probably make it.
Here's the thing most buyers miss: the value of a Portwest isn't that it's the best at any single category. It's that you can consolidate six purchase orders into one. That matters more than people think. Every vendor I remove from our system saves me roughly 4-6 hours of admin work per quarter — and that's before we talk about consolidation freight rates.
In Q1 2024, I ran a consolidation exercise that cut our active PPE vendors from 9 down to 4. Portwest survived. And here's something vendors won't tell you: the failure point is almost never the fabric. It's the seam tape. If a supplier can't tell you how they seal their seams — heat-welded, taped, glued — you're buying a coat that will fail quietly.
What should I actually check before buying high-visibility vests?
This is the question that trips up new buyers the most, because the marketing makes everything look equivalent.
First, compliance class. ANSI/ISEA 107 splits high-visibility apparel into Type O (off-road), Type R (roadway), and Type P (public safety). Within those, Class 1, 2, and 3 correspond to how much reflective material is required. If you buy Class 1 for a roadway crew, you're non-compliant — and increasingly, general contractors will reject the shipment at the gate.
Second thing — and this is where I changed my mind after getting burned — reflective durability matters more than initial reflectivity. A vest that starts at 400 cd/lx/m² but drops below 250 after 25 wash cycles fails the ANSI threshold. The standard requires reflectivity to remain above a minimum after washing. Vendors quote the fresh-out-of-the-bag number because it's higher. Ask for the post-wash retention data.
Third: inspect the sizing. Cheap vests run small and workers won't wear them over winter layers. We've had a return rate of 12-15% on size mismatches before I started requiring sample sizes from every new supplier.
In 2023, I watched a client reject an entire truckload of vests because the certificates didn't match the ANSI 107-2020 revision. That single rejection cost the vendor a relationship and cost the site three days of worker downtime. Check the revision date. It matters.
Do slip-on work boots for men hold up on real job sites?
Depends entirely on the environment, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Slip-on work boots shine in warehouses, light manufacturing, food processing, and anywhere workers change footwear frequently or deal with frequent entry/exit. No laces means faster changing, less tripping hazard from loose laces, and lower cross-contamination risk in food environments.
We ran a three-month pilot in 2023 with our 120-person warehouse crew. Adoption rate — meaning the workers who actually wore them daily rather than going back to their old boots — was around 78% for slip-ons versus 52% for lace-up. The reason wasn't comfort. It was the thirty seconds of donning and doffing at shift start and end. Small friction compounds.
What slip-ons don't do well: uneven ground, long-distance walking, and heavy ankle support scenarios. If your crew is walking 8-10 miles across a rough site, a properly laced boot gives you more stability. Don't force slip-ons into that job just because they're convenient.
Two specs to check regardless: ASTM F2913 for slip resistance (especially important if there's oil or water on the floor), and ASTM F2413 for impact and compression protection. Cheap slip-ons often have the silhouette without the rating.
Who sells Brunt work boots, and should I add them to my comparison sheet?
Brunt is primarily sold through their own direct channel and a limited set of authorized retailers. You won't typically find them in the big MRO distributor catalogs the way you'd find Portwest or Timberland Pro.
Whether to add them depends on your buying pattern. If you're outfitting 30-50 people at a time and you're comfortable with direct-to-brand logistics, they're worth a look. If you're outfitting 200+ people quarterly, need consolidated invoicing, and require a vendor that integrates into your existing AP workflow, the direct model is a friction point. Not a flaw in the product — just a mismatch in procurement model.
I've had Brunt on our evaluation list twice. Both times we passed, not for quality reasons but because our ERP doesn't easily handle their order structure. That's a real cost, and it's rarely factored into the brand comparison.
What's the hidden cost nobody warns you about in PPE procurement?
Compliance rework.
When I audited our 2024 spending across all PPE categories, I found that roughly 22% of our overruns traced back to specification failures — wrong class of hi-vis, unrated safety footwear, or expired certifications. Three things, and they matter more than most buyers realize.
One: the shift from unit price comparison to TCO comparison. In 2020, my scoring matrix weighted price at 40%. In 2025, it's down to 25%. Compliance documentation went from 15% to 30%. That's not me being cautious — that's responding to site inspectors, insurance audits, and client requirements that have tightened significantly.
Two: certification revisions. If your spec sheet still references ANSI 107-2015 or older EN ISO 20471 versions, update it. The current revision for high-vis is ANSI 107-2020 (as of my most recent check in January 2025). Some of the pre-2020 certificates have changed thresholds.
Three: the labor expectation. Workers in 2025 will simply not wear gear that's uncomfortable. Ten years ago, a stiff raincoat or poorly fitted vest was tolerated. Now, if it's not comfortable, it stays in the locker. That makes breathability, fit, and weight genuine procurement criteria — not nice-to-haves.
The fundamentals haven't changed. People still need protection from rain, impact, cuts, and visibility hazards. What changed is the execution standard — materials, certifications, and worker expectations have all moved upward. Spec sheets from 2020 aren't wrong, they're just quiet about the parts that now matter.
