Portwest PPE Review: What 4 Months of Testing Taught Us
The call came in at 7:15 on a Tuesday. Mark, our warehouse manager, had just pulled a pallet of gloves that arrived from our regular supplier the week before. The outer shell was cracking at the seam line on about a third of them.
That's not a "send it back" kind of problem. That's a "someone goes home with an injury because their glove gave out at the wrong moment" kind of problem.
I'm the quality compliance manager at a mid-sized metal fabrication facility in Ohio. We aren't a Fortune 500 operation, but we move roughly 50,000 units of PPE a year, and I review every item before it reaches our 140+ workers. I've been in this role for almost five years. In 2024 I rejected 12% of first deliveries—mostly due to spec deviations like mislabeled ratings or material substitutions that didn't match the data sheets. So we set up a structured evaluation: order samples, test against the relevant safety standards, get feedback from the people who'd actually wear the gear. The testing ran from March through June 2024.
Portwest Liverpool Zip Coverall
We started with the Liverpool zip coverall—their mid-range option with a 65/35 polycotton blend, a UPF rating of 40+, and CE certification for industrial use. We ordered samples in three sizes.
First test was durability. We ran them through 25 industrial wash cycles at 75°C (that's the laundering standard in our facility, not home washing). Pull tests on the seams came in within spec. The zipper was the standout, honestly. On mid-range coveralls, flimsy zippers are the norm. That wasn't the case here. After twenty-five washes, the zipper still ran smooth and the teeth aligned properly.
The quirk: sizing runs small. We had to size up for most of our team compared to their usual brands. I'm not sure if that's a European cut or just their pattern philosophy. If you're ordering for your crew, go one size up.
One thing before anyone thinks this is an all-purpose coverall: the Liverpool is not FR-rated. If you're working near energized equipment, this is not your coverall. It's for general industrial use. Portwest Hard Hat: Competent, If Not Exciting
The Portwest hard hat we trialled is a straightforward EN 397 certified shell with a six-point suspension. We put it through our standard battery: impact drops from the test rig, lateral deformation checks, and a chin strap stress test. It passed everything side-by-side with the MSA equivalent we'd been using—neither outperformed the other.
Comfort is where preferences diverge. The Portwest shell sits deeper, which our longer-faced workers liked, but it rode a little high on the guys with shorter heads. No clear winner.
My honest take: it's a perfectly competent hard hat. It didn't wow us—it's PPE, it doesn't need to. I need it to protect consistently and survive being thrown off a forklift. It does both. TIG Welding Gloves: The Surprise

Quick context on TIG welding: it takes far more finger dexterity than MIG or stick. You're feeding filler rod one-handed while controlling the arc with a foot pedal. Thick gloves kill your feel for the rod. It's a constant trade-off between protection and precision.
The Portwest TIG welding gloves arrived as a goatskin build with a Kevlar stitch and a shorter cuff, rated EN 388 3 for abrasion and 2 for cut resistance. Dave picked one up, flexed his hand, and said, "Too thin." I am not going to lie, I thought the same thing when I handled them.

Heat Waves Safety Glasses: An Anti-Fog Verdict
The Heat Waves safety glasses came into our review because we needed a new anti-fog option. Our previous glasses fogged up constantly during summer—our line area isn't climate controlled, and the wash-down system keeps humidity high.
Heat Waves is Portwest's budget eyewear line, ANSI Z87.1+ rated, with a contoured frame and an anti-fog coating. We trialled 30 pairs across three departments from May through August 2024. The verdict: noticeably fewer fog complaints than the previous brand. I want to say it was around a 70% reduction in reported fogging, but don't quote me on that—it's based on department lead feedback, not a controlled study.
Two workers said the frame pressed against their temples after six hours of wear. I suspect the nylon frame warms up and holds tension closer, but I'm honestly not sure if it's heat or just head shape. Worth noting for extended shifts.
Nitrile vs Latex Gloves: Our Communication Failure
Let me tell you about the most frustrating part of this whole review—and it had nothing to do with Portwest's products.
We needed to reorder chemical handling gloves for our finishing department. We'd been using nitrile for the better part of two years, but nobody had written it down. Oversight on our part, completely avoidable, now fixed—every order line includes material composition.

- Nitrile is a synthetic rubber. Latex is natural rubber. That's the core difference.
- Nitrile resists oils, solvents, and chemicals significantly better than latex. For industrial chemical handling, nitrile is generally the safer choice.
- Latex offers better elasticity and fit in some applications, but degrades faster when exposed to petroleum-based solvents.
- Latex protein allergies are a genuine hazard—once a worker sensitizes, you've introduced a chronic health issue. Many facilities have banned latex entirely.
The price gap is real: in the quotes we pulled in late 2024, nitrile ran roughly 30-50% higher per case than the equivalent latex glove. On the volume we go through, that's a meaningful line item. But a single chemical hand injury costs more in medical bills and downtime than a year of glove price differences. For our usage, nitrile is the default.
What We Decided
Four months in, we've placed three orders with Portwest and added them to our approved supplier list for coveralls, TIG welding gloves, and safety glasses. The hard hat comparison is on hold until winter when our team spends more time outdoors—we'll let the crew vote.
The biggest lesson wasn't about Portwest specifically. A broad catalog doesn't automatically mean mediocre quality, and a company with 120 years in the business probably knows how to make a decent glove. But you don't know until you test.
The second lesson was internal. The nitrile vs latex mix-up cost us time and money, and it was 100% avoidable. PPE selection isn't just about finding a supplier you trust—it's about knowing your own requirements down to the material composition. If you don't write it down, you don't know it.
