PPE in 2025: How to Choose the Right Safety Glasses, Vests, Gloves, and Boots
"What safety equipment should I buy?" is the question I hear most from clients. My honest answer usually frustrates them: "It depends."
That's because I'm a purchasing coordinator at an industrial safety supply company. I've handled 200+ rush orders in six years, including same-day turnarounds for food processing plants and construction contractors who realized at 4:30 PM they didn't have compliant PPE for the next morning's shift. In my role coordinating safety equipment for B2B buyers, I've learned there's no universal kit that works for everyone.
Here are three scenarios I keep running into:

What was best practice in 2020 doesn't necessarily hold in 2025. The fundamentals—compliance, protection, durability—haven't changed. But execution has, and workers today push back harder on gear that's uncomfortable. So here's how I walk clients through these decisions.
Scenario A: The Compliance Crunch—Building Your Baseline Kit
In March 2024, a plant manager called me 36 hours before a scheduled OSHA inspection. His team's gear was in rough shape: expired vests, scratched safety glasses, gloves held together with tape. He needed a compliant baseline immediately.
When you're in this situation, resist the urge to buy the full catalog. The audit isn't checking whether you bought premium everything. It's checking whether the right gear is present and meets current standards.
Two items cover most baseline needs:
High-Vis Vests

Short answer: yes. Nitrile gloves are safe for food contact when manufactured to meet FDA requirements (21 CFR Parts 170–199). They're latex-free, they don't shed particles like vinyl, and they resist punctures better than most disposable alternatives. In commercial kitchens, food processing, and prep work, disposable nitrile is a legitimate standard.
But I always ask a follow-up: is nitrile what you actually need?
Here's how I learned that the hard way. We didn't have a formal specification sheet for glove orders. It cost us when we ordered 500 pairs of nitrile for a client who was doing hot work—cutting, grinding, acetylene—when they needed brown leather gloves. The nitrile melted against a single spark. The third time we processed a return for the same mistake, I finally created a two-category glove checklist.
Brown leather gloves are the workhorse for:
- General construction, framing, and material handling
- Welding and hot work (use treated, heat-resistant leather)
- Rough, abrasive, or sharp materials that slice through thin disposables
Nitrile gloves are the right call for:
- Food handling and prep (assuming FDA-compliant nitrile)
- Medical, lab, and janitorial tasks
- Chemical splash protection, with each chemical's compatibility confirmed first
The mistake was thinking of "gloves" as one category. They aren't. And on the FDA question: disposable nitrile is safe for food handling, provided it meets federal food contact rules and workers change gloves on a schedule that prevents cross-contamination. That schedule matters as much as the material.
One caveat: I can only speak to the B2B context I work in. If you're a small food business under local health department rules, verify with them. Some jurisdictions add requirements beyond federal guidelines.
Scenario C: Footwear—Tactical Boots vs. Rated Safety Boots
Footwear gets the most pushback from workers. Safety toes are heavy, boots need breaking in, and an eight-hour shift in stiff boots feels like twelve.
So when clients ask about Merrell tactical boots as an alternative to purpose-built safety footwear, I understand why. The Merrell tactical line is comfortable, lightweight, and built for long days on your feet. For security patrols, warehouse supervision, or light industrial work with no falling-object hazards, they're a legitimate option.

Choose tactical boots (like Merrell) when:
- Work involves patrol, inspection, or indoor supervision
- No falling-object or heavy-rolling-equipment hazards exist
- Your hazard assessment doesn't mandate safety footwear
Choose ASTM-rated safety boots when:
- You're on a construction site or production floor
- Anything heavy moves above or beside your feet
- Your company's safety plan requires rated footwear
The good news: tactical-style comfort and safety ratings aren't mutually exclusive anymore. There are hybrid boots with composite toes that feel much closer to athletic shoes than the old steel-toed slabs. Workers complain less, which means they actually wear them. That's progress worth paying for.
How to Figure Out Which Scenario Applies to You
Not sure which scenario fits your team? Ask yourself these four questions:
- What does your hazard assessment say? Start with the formal risk assessment. If it doesn't exist, that's the gap to fix first.
- What does the worker actually handle? Task defines PPE, not the job title. A "warehouse associate" at one company packs boxes; at another, they haul steel.
- What has already gone wrong? Your incident log is the best guide. Hand injuries mean cut-resistant isn't optional. Forklift incidents mean safety toes are non-negotiable.
- Are you buying for paperwork or protection? If the answer is "paperwork," you'll save money short-term and pay for it in returns, complaints, and future incidents. Real protection rarely costs significantly more than barely-compliant gear.
If you're still unsure, talk to your supplier. A good distributor can help you map gear to hazards, and if they can't, find another distributor. I've been on the supply side for six years, and the best partnerships happen when procurement stops seeing PPE as a line item and starts treating it as a system.
The fundamentals haven't changed: protect hands, eyes, head, and feet. But how you execute that in 2025—materials, comfort, standards—looks different from five years ago. Match the gear to the scenario, and you'll get compliance, happier workers, and better purchasing decisions.
