Better filters switch in about 1/10,000 of a second; cheap ones are several times slower. That's not a marketing detail; it's your retinas.

Spatter resistance. This doesn't get enough attention. A lens that gets pitted after a month of production welding scatters light and distorts your view of the weld pool. That pushes you back into the flip-the-helmet-up habit. Same trap, different path.

  • Ventilation. An unventilated vest in summer gets abandoned by Thursday. That's not a worker motivation issue; it's a design failure.
  • Modularity. MOLLE/PALS webbing means workers set up the vest for their real tasks, not the designer's assumptions about what they need.
  • Hi-vis compatibility. If your site requires hi-vis, you need a vest with rated hi-vis panels built in. Portwest's tactical options include versions meeting EN ISO 20471. Layering separate vests creates a heat trap.

  2. Look at time-on-task. A worker who spends ten hours walking and twenty minutes welding needs better boots than a better helmet. Match the investment to where the hours actually go.
  3. Consider what they'll actually wear. The most spec'd-out piece of safety equipment is worthless if it's uncomfortable. I've seen more failures from abandoned gear than from underspec'd gear.
