There's No 'Best' Safety Glove. Here's What I Spec After Checking 200 PPE Lines a Year
I'm the person who checks safety equipment before it goes out to customers—about 200 product lines a year, plus random pulls from the warehouse. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we rejected eight SKUs because the certification mark on the label didn't match the product's paperwork. Portwest is one of the brands I review most, so I've become picky about it. Here's the honest conclusion from all that checking.
There is no 'best' safety glove. There's only the glove that fits the hazard—and the one that doesn't.
That's not how most B2B buyers shop. They open a catalog, sort by rating, and click the top result. I do not mean ratings are useless. They just answer a narrower question than people expect.
OSHA's PPE requirement (29 CFR 1910.132) tells employers to assess hazards and choose PPE that matches them. I've never seen an OSHA citation that said 'you failed to buy the most expensive glove.' I've seen plenty that said 'you didn't match the glove to the task.'
Take a fence contractor I dealt with last spring. The order was for a crew installing a galvanized steel fence along a highway median. It listed one glove style, clear-lens glasses, and nothing for the welding the crew would do on the gate frames. It wasn't a careless safety manager—just someone building an order from a catalog instead of from the job site. Nothing on that order was wrong. The problem was what wasn't on it.
The cut rating is not an impact rating
The first thing I check on any hand-protection order is whether the hazard was separated into its parts. Cut resistance and impact protection are tested with different methods. A glove can have an excellent cut rating and do very little when a knuckle meets a steel post. If the work includes banging your hands, a cut-only glove is a partial answer.
The fence crew above handles galvanized steel fence fabric with cut edges, wire ties, and panel corners. That's the cut hazard. Then they brace themselves against posts while lifting and aligning sections. That's the impact hazard. Two different risks, one pair of hands. A worker who can't feel what they're doing will pull the glove off to finish a task, and a glove in the truck protects nobody. For fine work, buy a lighter cut-resistant glove rated with the dexterity the task needs.
For reference: cut resistance is rated under standards like EN 388 or ANSI/ISEA 105, and back-of-hand impact protection under ANSI/ISEA 138. If the packaging doesn't show those marks, ask the supplier why before you pay.
Hot work: your FR coverall has a narrow job
The same fence crew was planning to weld the gate frames. The original order had no flame-resistant clothing on it.
When there's hot work on the schedule, I start with a Portwest Bizweld FR coverall. It's a flame-resistant garment built for the thermal side of welding and cutting. It's meant to resist ignition and self-extinguish instead of letting a spark turn a cotton shirt into a fuse. That's its job, and it does that job well.
But an FR garment is not a shield against everything on a hot-work job. Here's something vendors rarely bring up: when you cut, grind, or weld galvanized steel, the zinc coating burns and creates zinc oxide fumes. Those fumes can cause metal fume fever. An FR coverall does not stop that. Ventilation and the right respiratory protection do. Buying the coverall and skipping the ventilation means you bought half a solution.
Also, the certification should be printed on the garment's label—EN ISO 11612 in Europe, for example, or NFPA 2112 / ASTM F1506 in North America, depending on the hazard. If the mark is missing, that's a red flag. I've rejected first shipments because the certificate was attached to an email but not present on the garment.
I wish I had hard data on how many FR garments get retired because of poor laundering instead of manufacturing defects. What I can offer is anecdotal evidence from returns: chlorine bleach and fabric softener destroy FR performance faster than most crews realize. Wash according to the label. The label isn't decoration.
Sunlight and glare are part of the hazard assessment
A highway median has no shade. The sun beats down, the light bounces off bare zinc, and the crew moves between open stretches and the dark space under overpasses. Their eyes keep adjusting. If they're not wearing eye protection that handles that, they end up squinting, rubbing their eyes, or lifting their glasses to look at something—all of which create their own risks.
For outdoor crews like this, I'd put photochromic safety glasses on the list. The lenses darken when UV hits them and clear again when it doesn't, so the worker isn't swapping eyewear every time the light changes.
Photochromic lenses aren't for everyone, and I'll say it plainly: if your crew works indoors under steady lighting, don't spend the extra money. Buy clear lenses with an anti-fog coating instead. Photochromic is an outdoor tool, not an upgrade badge.
When I verify safety eyewear, I look for the impact mark on the lens or frame—ANSI Z87.1+ in the United States, EN 166 in many other markets. Without it, I don't care how comfortable the frame feels. It doesn't go into circulation.
One more thing most vendors won't tell you: most car windshields filter out UV, and photochromic lenses react to UV. So a worker who loves them on the job might find the lenses stay clear while they drive. That's not a defect. Warn them ahead of time and you'll save yourself a support call.
Are nitrile gloves latex free? Yes—and that's only half the answer
I hear some version of this question at least once a week: are nitrile gloves latex free? Yes. Nitrile is made from nitrile butadiene rubber, a synthetic material that does not contain natural rubber latex proteins. For someone with a latex allergy, that's the answer they need.
But the clean answer doesn't mean those gloves are the right answer for every task. If your workers are handling cut wire or sharp edges, a disposable nitrile glove won't help. That's not a criticism of nitrile—it's a reminder that 'latex-free' answers an allergy question, not a hazard question. Use disposable nitrile for paints, oils, chemicals, and cleanup. Use a cut-resistant glove for anything sharp. If a task involves both, plan the task so it doesn't force you to choose.
One related note for anyone managing sensitivities: nitrile is latex-free, but it still contains accelerators that can cause contact dermatitis in a small percentage of people. If a worker reports itchy skin under nitrile gloves, don't dismiss it as 'not a latex allergy.' It can still be a real reaction and worth exploring with a health professional.
Fair objection: I sell safety equipment
At this point, you might think I'm just pushing product from the brands I stock. Fair enough. I don't earn a commission on any of these picks, and my job is to stop bad product, not to move more units. The Portwest items above are here for one reason: every time I open a sample and check it against the label, it tells the same story. If a task doesn't call for them, I'd write a different spec.
The more important objection is price. Yes, an impact-rated, cut-resistant glove costs more than a basic coated glove. But the cheap glove that workers take off because it's uncomfortable or too hot is not cheaper—it's just not protecting anyone. Buy the lightest adequate protection they'll actually wear.
So here's my bottom line. Stop sorting by 'best rating.' Start with the actual task, the actual hazards, and the moments where a person will be tempted to take the gear off. If you don't know why they'd remove it, you haven't finished the selection.
There is no best safety glove. There's the right glove for this job, and the wrong one. If you choose honestly, check the labels when the shipment arrives, and train people on the limits of what the gear can do, you'll be safer than someone who bought the top rating and called it a day.
