What a Portwest FR Jacket Taught Me About Brown Work Boots, Metatarsal Boots, and Nitrile vs Latex Gloves

I thought I had PPE figured out

I've been handling PPE orders for a 40-person fabrication crew for 8 years. If you count the mistakes I've made and documented, it comes to about $38k in wasted budget. Not a record I'm proud of, but it made me the person everyone asks before ordering gloves.

This article is about one order in particular. It happened in September 2024. It changed how I think about brown work boots, metatarsal boots, the Portwest brand, and why I'll always pick nitrile gloves over latex for this shop.

The Portwest brand lesson

In early September, our client moved an audit up to the 19th. That sounds like a small change, but it was a huge deal. Our compliance file needed to show that every person working in the steel area had the right footwear and protective clothing. The new date landed two weeks earlier than I'd planned for. My fault, not the client's. I had been waiting on a budget sign-off and putting off the order.

Suddenly I needed 22 FR jackets, 22 pairs of metatarsal boots, 100 pairs of work gloves, and a bunch of safety glasses. If you buy PPE for a living, you know this story. You don't decide your glove choice in a hurry. Or maybe you do, and then you eat the cost.

I called our usual suppliers. Most said 10-12 business days. That didn't work. One distributor told me they could pull a mixed order from the Portwest catalog and have it delivered by the 18th if we used overnight freight. I remember hesitating because, honestly, I'd never been a big Portwest brand fan.

I had this idea that a company making everything from rainwear to safety glasses couldn't be the best at any one thing. I preferred specialist brands for boots and specialist brands for FR. But in a pinch, I called the guy anyway. I asked for a Portwest FR jacket that met our spec. He sent me a link with the standard clearly listed on the page. Not a vague flame-resistant claim. A real standard, fabric weight, and care instructions. That was already more than I had found from some other brands.

For a mid-sized crew with a deadline, the broad catalog saved me.

Brown work boots and the metatarsal gap

Now for the part that still makes me cringe.

When the auditor's office sent the new checklist, it included a line about metatarsal protection. I read it, told myself we probably needed it, and then honestly did not verify it against what we had in the building. What we had in the building was a bunch of brown work boots. Comfortable, broken-in, and completely wrong.

The brown work boots looked like work boots. They had a thick sole, a padded collar, and deep tread. What they didn't have was a safety toe or a metatarsal guard. I had never looked at the label because I assumed work boot meant safety boot. It doesn't. There are hundreds of boots out there that are work boots and nothing else.

The difference between a safety toe boot and a real metatarsal boot is the extra guard over the instep and the top of your foot. A regular safety toe protects against a drop straight onto the toe. A metatarsal boot covers further back, which matters when a steel edge or tool skids across the top of your foot. The ASTM F2413 standard has a specific test for metatarsal protection and the label will say Mt. If the label doesn't say Mt, you don't have metatarsal boots.

I'm not going to tell you a gory story. What happened was a grinder kicked back and the tool landed across a guy's foot. He was wearing those brown work boots. By some kind of luck, he wasn't injured. But the boot was torn, and the safety coordinator saw the damage. That started a conversation about what we had actually issued. That conversation led to the audit requirement. And the audit requirement led to the rush order of real metatarsal boots.

I ordered 22 pairs of Portwest metatarsal boots. They weren't the old brown work boots. They had a chunky toe guard and the Mt marking on the tag. Two days later, the auditor checked one pair and moved on. That was it. It could have been such an easy thing to get right from the beginning.

Nitrile gloves vs latex gloves: a question I almost got wrong

During the same order, I had to choose gloves for the mechanics. I made the mistake of asking the crew what they wanted. Half said the blue ones and half said the thin white ones. That's not a spec. That's a preference based on whatever they happened to grab last time.

I had to actually decide between nitrile gloves vs latex gloves. My old habit was to order latex because they're cheaper and they have good dexterity. But our crew works with oils, solvents, and metal shavings. Latex doesn't hold up as well against those, and we have at least two people with skin reactions. Once we switched to nitrile glove stock, those skin complaints basically disappeared. Puncture and oil resistance is better, and you don't have to worry about latex protein allergies.

The funny part is that the total cost difference is smaller than most people think. Nitrile gloves cost a little more per box, but a single hand injury costs way more than a year of glove purchases. In our case, the choice ended up being nitrile gloves, 7 mil, textured fingers. And it was part of the same Portwest order, which eliminated another ask-your-distributor loop.

I still have mixed feelings about the whole nitrile vs latex argument. Latex is still a legitimate material for certain tasks. If you're in a medical setting or you need maximum tactile sensitivity, latex is hard to beat. But in a metal fabrication shop, nitrile was the right call.

The $340 shipping decision

The order was supposed to arrive on the 18th. Then I got an email that the freight carrier had a delay. Not a specific time. Just a delay. This is the moment where all the decisions before mattered.

I called the distributor, paid $340 to reroute it with guaranteed next-day delivery. The original shipment had free shipping. I know that sounds like a waste of money. But the alternative was missing the audit deadline, losing a contract worth around $180k, and explaining to my boss why I saved $340. I don't think there's honestly a choice there. The $340 bought certainty. That's a line item I'm now happy to approve.

I used to have mixed feelings about expedited shipping. Part of me thought it was a cash grab by logistics companies. Another part knew that rush orders cause real chaos. But after this order, I'm convinced: when a deadline is real, pay for the certainty. The guarantee doesn't keep a truck from breaking, but it changes how the supplier prioritizes your problem.

What I tell other safety buyers now

I don't pretend to know everything. The whole reason I write these things down is because I've repeated too many mistakes that could have been avoided if I'd just read the label.

  • Buy to the standard, not the look. Brown work boots might be fine for casual work, but if the job requires metatarsal protection, the label has to say so.
  • Ask what FR actually means. A Portwest FR jacket with a documented standard is easier to defend in an audit than a mystery jacket from a brand nobody can verify.
  • Decide gloves based on the chemicals and the task. Nitrile gloves vs latex gloves is not a style question. It's a resistance question.
  • When a date matters, budget for delivery certainty. Free shipping is not free if it misses the deadline.

The order in September 2024 wasn't my proudest month. I got caught with my spreadsheet half-updated and my boots on the wrong feet, so to speak. But I got the crew what they needed, the audit passed, and I stopped assuming that work boot meant safety boot. That last one alone was worth the trouble.
