36 Hours Before an Audit: Portwest Coveralls, an Iron Man Welding Helmet, and a First Aid Kit Rescue

At 4:20 p.m. on a Tuesday in March 2024, I got a voicemail that ended a normal week. The client had moved its annual safety audit up by three weeks. It was now scheduled to start Thursday morning. That gave us 36 hours.

I coordinate safety training and PPE for a 40-person industrial maintenance contractor in Ohio. We do shutdowns and repair work at refineries and food plants. If a crew doesn't show up with the right gear, it doesn't get through the gate.

The Thursday morning walkthrough

By 6:45 a.m., all fourteen pairs of Portwest coveralls were hanging in the crew room, organized by size with the FR labels visible. The four replacement trainers were lined up under the lockers, including the half sizes. The Iron Man helmet was on the welder's bench, and he was already cleaning the lens.
