Natural rubber latex does not hold up especially well against petroleum-based oils and solvents. It can soften, swell, and tear sooner than nitrile. The glove choice looked smart until we saw how quickly the latex gloves broke down after contact with some of our chemicals.
Nitrile is made from synthetic rubber and typically offers better resistance to oils and better puncture resistance. It also avoids the latex proteins that can cause allergic reactions in some people. The FDA banned powdered surgeon's gloves and powdered patient examination gloves because of the significant allergic reactions associated with powdered latex gloves; that final rule took effect in 2017. Powder-free low-protein latex products still exist, but they are not what I want in a shop environment when nitrile does the job more predictably.
I saved maybe $150 by choosing latex across several cases. Then I paid $80 in return shipping and another $230 to replace the unused latex cases with nitrile when we switched. The savings disappeared, and the replacement order cost more because we needed it quickly. That is the classic cheap-first mistake.
Where I Would Still Choose Differently
I am not suggesting one answer fits every factory. If your workplace only has a falling-object hazard and workers are never in a position to hit their heads from the side, a Type 1 hard hat may be perfectly reasonable. If your team does dry, clean assembly and has no latex sensitivity, powder-free latex can be a fine, lower-cost option. And if the chemicals involved are aggressive, neither ordinary latex nor ordinary nitrile may be enough; you need to check the glove manufacturer's chemical compatibility chart.
