Choosing PPE by Job: Portwest Hi-Vis, Hard Hats, Work Boots, and Gloves

Start With Your Conditions, Not Your Cart

Most PPE buying advice starts with a product. That's backwards. I'm a quality/compliance manager at a safety equipment company. I review every spec before it goes on a purchase order—about 200 unique items a year, maybe 180 if I count re-designs—and I rejected roughly 11% of first deliveries in 2024 because the item didn't match the actual conditions it would be used in. Not because it was defective. Because it was the right product for the wrong job.

There is no universal best hi-vis vest, hard hat, work boot, or glove. There's only the best for your hazard. So here's how I evaluate gear: by scenario. We'll look at three: roadside construction, welding and hot work, and cold-weather outdoor work.

It's tempting to think a trusted brand is enough. A good brand makes it easier—I specify Portwest for a lot of categories because the range is consistent and the standards are clearly printed. But a brand doesn't override a bad match. A Portwest hard hat that's perfect for a highway crew can be the wrong choice for a welder who needs something low-profile under a hood. The same goes for Doc Martens work boots and Tillman welding gloves. Known names, but 'known' isn't the same as 'correct for your site.'

Four Questions Before You Choose Anything

Before getting into scenarios, classify your own situation. I use these four questions:

  1. What is the primary hazard? Moving vehicles, falling objects, sparks, cold, or just 'looking professional'?
  2. What standard applies? In North America, that means ANSI/ISEA 107 for hi-vis, ANSI Z89.1 for hard hats, and ASTM F2413 for safety footwear. In Europe, the numbers are different.
  3. How long and how hard is it worn? An 8-hour shift is different from 20 minutes of occasional use.
  4. What does failure cost? An $18 vest that gets ignored is more expensive than a $45 vest that gets worn.

If you can answer those, you're ready for the scenarios.

Scenario 1: Roadside and Vehicle-Exposed Construction

If you're directing traffic, working near blind spots, or on a highway at dusk, visibility is the first priority. For this scenario, I'd usually specify a Portwest C472 hi-vis safety vest. It's a breathable mesh style that meets Class 2 requirements, which covers most daytime roadside work. For nighttime or high-speed work, move to Class 3—more background material, more retroreflective tape—or add accessory items. And if there's any flash-fire or arc-flash risk, the mesh vest is the wrong choice.

For head protection, Portwest hard hats are a solid baseline. I like the ones with side slots and a ratchet fit because they stay on better. A hard hat that slides around is a safety hazard. Whatever you buy needs to meet ANSI Z89.1 Type I or Type II, depending on whether impacts come from overhead or at an angle. The price difference between compliant and non-compliant is usually small; the cost of a head injury is not.

One thing people overlook: hi-vis fades. If a vest lives in a work truck or sits in direct sunlight in summer, the retroreflective tape degrades faster than you'd think. We write replacement schedules into audits. The cheapest vest looks the same in the package and completely different after three months on a dashboard.

For boots, you need slip resistance and toe protection. Doc Martens work boots are comfortable—I've seen crews wear them all day—and some models are rated to ASTM F2413. But not every Doc Martens boot is a work boot. Check for the safety marking on the tongue or shaft. No marking means it's a fashion boot, not PPE.

Scenario 2: Welding, Grinding, and Hot Work

Welding changes the whole specification. That mesh hi-vis vest from Scenario 1 can melt to your skin. For hot work, the base layer needs to be FR-rated, and any hi-vis worn over it should also be FR or removed while welding.

For gloves, Tillman welding gloves are one of the most recognized names in the field. But there isn't one glove for every welding process. For stick welding, choose a heavier leather glove with thermal insulation. For TIG welding, pick a lighter, more dexterous style—often elk or pigskin—because TIG needs finger precision. The wrong glove will get taken off. A welder who takes off gloves to do fine work is unprotected. That decision—taking off the glove—is the real safety issue, and it's a product-fit problem, not a behavior problem.

The surprise, in our Q1 2024 quality audit, wasn't the price gap between premium and budget welding gloves. It was how much dexterity the cheap pair cost. The welder complained within half a shift. We switched to a mid-priced pair that cost about 40% more, and the output gain covered it quickly. That's the value-over-price calculation: don't look at the glove cost, look at the cost of the work not done.

And if you're asking 'are leather gloves good for winter' in a welding context—leather is good for resisting heat, not for retaining warmth. For cold-weather welding, use an insulated glove that still lets you grip a stinger, not a heavy winter glove.

Scenario 3: Cold Weather and Winter Maintenance Work

Now the honest answer to 'are leather gloves good for winter': it depends on the leather and the lining. Split-leather work gloves—the cheap tan ones—are not warm. They block abrasion but they don't trap heat. A lined leather glove, on the other hand, can be excellent. The leather blocks wind; the lining traps warmth. Add a water-resistant finish and you have a solid winter glove for material handling and tool work.

The idea that 'all leather gloves are warm' comes from an era when leather was the only durable material. It's a legacy myth. Material itself doesn't create warmth; trapped still air does. A leather palm with no liner has no place for still air to accumulate.

For extreme cold, use a thin liner inside an insulated leather glove or mitt. The liner handles sweat; the leather handles snow and wind.

Boots in this scenario need insulation and traction more than brand names. Doc Martens work boots can work on warmer winter days, but on snow and ice you want a boot with a cold-weather rating, a waterproof membrane, and a lug outsole. The name on the boot matters less than the chart on the box.

Hard hats in winter: if you wear a balaclava or knit hat underneath, check that the suspension still sits level. A hat that's tilted up by a thick beanie is worse than no hat, because the clearance is gone.

How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're Actually In

If you're still unsure, go stand in the work area for ten minutes. Look at the hazards yourself. Then check the labels and standards on your current gear. Then ask: 'What's the worst thing that can happen if this item fails?' If the answer is a hospital visit or a fire, buy for the worst case. If the answer is just wear and tear, buy for comfort and price.

I have mixed feelings about buyers who chase the lowest quote. Part of me gets it. Budget pressure is real. But in 2023, we rejected a batch of 8,000 hard hats that didn't meet spec, and the return and replacement cost more than the savings from the low quote. That's when I started requiring spec sheets before orders.

Portwest, Doc Martens, Tillman—they're all tools. The scenario decides which one is right. No supplier gets everything right every time, but if you start with your conditions, the standards, and a willingness to pay slightly more for the correct match, you're ahead of most procurement checklists.
