According to EN 812, the bump cap standard, the insert is tested for impact against stationary objects. It is not rated for falling tools or overhead loads. For that you need a hard hat that meets EN 397 or OSHA requirements under 29 CFR 1910.135. We had to put that disclaimer in three separate emails. The insert itself was easy to install—basically a plastic shell and pad that slides into a hi-vis cap. It stayed in place through a week of daily wear, which is more than I can say for some inserts we've tested.
The latex glove question I didn't expect
Now for the unexpected part. Halfway through the field test, our customer service team forwarded me a question from a different account:
Can I use latex gloves for cooking?
It seemed out of place for a PPE review, but it's actually the same conversation. We sell work gloves, and people assume all disposable gloves are the same. The short answer is: use gloves that are marked food-safe and follow your local health code. Latex can work for cooking if the gloves are food-grade and no one nearby has a latex allergy. But in commercial kitchens, many operators avoid latex because allergies are a real liability. Food-safe nitrile handles fats well and doesn't create the same allergy exposure. At home, honestly, you can just wash your hands and skip the glove. If a recipe calls for gloves, use a food-safe nitrile pair.
According to the FDA's Food Code, single-use gloves for food service should be used when handling ready-to-eat food, but the code leaves the material choice up to the operator and the local authority. The safe move is to check whether the glove packaging says 'food handling'—and, if you're serving a customer, check their allergy list.
The verdict
We collected feedback from 12 mechanics who wore the gear for a 30-day trial. The coveralls got a 'pretty good but the chest pocket is a little low' from one guy. Another said the knee area felt snug when he was kneeling, but he was also wearing a pair of heavy work pants underneath. The boots got no complaints, which in footwear trials is high praise. The bump cap insert? The safety manager ordered extra. So we placed a first order: 120 coveralls, 60 pairs of boots, and 300 bump cap inserts. I added a note to our internal spec sheet so the next buyer doesn't have to redo this process. That's the efficiency part that gets overlooked.
What I learned
Per-unit price gets all the attention. The documentation, sizing consistency, and wash-test results are what get you later. The vendor we used before was $3 cheaper per coverall, and the coveralls started showing frayed seams after a dozen wash cycles. The replacement cost wiped out the savings. That's not Portwest advertising; that's math from our own purchase log.
I also learned that a good review only answers the question you ask. 'Is the sizing consistent?' is different from 'Is this the right garment for the hazard?' A bump cap insert is not a hard hat. An industrial work boot with a compliance rating is not the same as a ranch boot, even if both have composite toes. And a cooking glove needs a food-safe label, not just a latex label.
I can't claim this is the definitive Portwest review. My experience is based on one mid-size distributor's 30-day field trial and roughly 80 similar products. If you're kitting out an offshore rig or a welding crew, you need a different test protocol than we used. But for general industrial maintenance—coveralls that survive washing, boots with certifiable ratings, and head protection that workers will actually wear under a cap—the Portwest Liverpool zipper coverall, the Portwest work boots, and the bump cap insert all earned their place in our catalog.
Bottom line: you can't buy a safety program with a purchase order. But you can buy gear that makes the safety program easier to enforce. That's the review I'd want to read, and it's the one I'm leaving here.
