This matters even with something as common as nitrile gloves. Are nitrile gloves latex free? Yes. Nitrile is a synthetic rubber made from acrylonitrile and butadiene. It contains no natural rubber latex proteins. For a worker with a genuine Type I latex allergy, nitrile is the standard alternative. But 'latex-free' does not mean 'reaction-free.' Some nitrile gloves contain chemical accelerators—thiurams being the usual suspect—that can cause Type IV contact dermatitis. So when your team says latex-free gloves make their hands itchy, the problem might not be latex. It could be the glove chemistry.

What that phrase doesn't tell you is the difference between oil-resistant gloves and flash-fire protection. In a puddle, diesel doesn't ignite as easily as gasoline. But a diesel shop has hot surfaces, sparks, fuel lines, and oily rags. Nitrile gloves protect against oil and diesel splash. They don't protect against heat. FR coveralls protect against flash fire. They aren't chemical splash suits. In many jobs you need both—and the switch between them has to be intentional.
The Cost of Looking Safe
In Q1 2024, we found a batch of nitrile gloves that looked perfect on the outside. The first 500 pairs from the order flexed fine. Four months later, the last 8,000 pairs were brittle; you could crack the polymer just by bending the fingers. The certificate didn't match the material actually used in production. Rejecting that batch cost us about $22,000 in rework and delayed deliveries for two weeks.
That was a known, named cost. The harder cost is the one you don't see: a worker wearing a glove that fails at the wrong moment, or an FR coverall that shrinks after industrial laundry and no longer meets the trim requirements. The surprise isn't that products fail. It's that the failure is often invisible until you inspect the paperwork or the washed garment.
To be fair, not every supplier is hiding something. Some just have sloppy documentation. But sloppy documentation is its own risk. If you can't prove compliance after an incident, you're in a different kind of trouble—even if the product was fine.
The Only Reason to Buy Sooner Rather Than Cheaper
Here's a rule I've learned the hard way: in an emergency, pay for certainty. A client once needed FR coveralls for a scheduled outage. One supplier said 'delivery in seven to ten days, probably.' Another gave me a contractual date and a test report before I signed. The premium was maybe four hundred dollars. If the coveralls missed the deadline, the outage would have been postponed at a cost that was several times that. The premium didn't buy speed. It bought certainty. 'Probably on time' is the most expensive promise in PPE procurement.
What I Check Before I Approve an Order
My checklist isn't clever. It's four things:

- The product survives real life. Wash it, flex it, wear it for a shift. Before ordering 1,000.
